Subject: NatSCA Study: Counting visitor numbers in mixed museums
Dear all
For some time the NatSCA Committee have been looking for ways to use hard data to demonstrate governing bodies and councils that natural history is well-loved by museum visitors, particularly when posts or provisions are being cut. There is a very clear study
undertaken by MLA London showing that natural history is the most popular topic of interest (82% of respondents), but nothing exists for the country as a whole.
This is where we need you, our membership, to help contribute to a simple study. We are asking museums
with mixed collections (e.g. containing natural history as well as art/social or local history/archaeology etc) to help us collect data by providing information
on the number of visitors to their gallery spaces over two days: one in August 2011 (to reflect school holidays) and one in term time.
Attached are the observation sheets for data collection, and instructions on how to proceed. We would be very grateful to all those who contribute. We appreciate that for some museums without
existing systems in place for this kind of data collection it requires an investment of staff time, but the potential use of the results could go a long way to protecting jobs and services in the future. Please consider using volunteers for data collection.
Please let me know at this stage if you are intending to submit data for this study, and send the completed
sheets by 1st November 2011. If you have any questions about this survey please get in touch.
Please feel free to send this on to colleagues in mixed museums who you don't think are part of NatSCA.
Many thanks in advance for your contributions.
All the best
Jack
