‘The European Discovery of Arab Culture’

Charles Burnett is Professor of the History of Islamic Influences in Europe. His lecture will trace the stages in the discovery of Arabic culture by European scholars from the early middle ages to the early-modern period, focussing in particular on the acquisition and translation of manuscripts and the establishment of Arabic at the European universities.
 
The lecture is free and all are welcome to attend – no prior booking is necessary and seating is on a first-come-first-served basis. Doors open at 5.45pm. There will also be an opportunity for lecture attendees to view the Royal Society’s ‘Arabick Roots’ exhibition after the event.
