medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

From: Terri Morgan <[log in to unmask]>

> Gerald of Clairvaux (blessed) (d. 1177) was a Lombard who became a
Cistercian monk, abbot of Fossanova, and then in 1170 abbot of Clairvaux.
While on a pastoral visitation at the monastery of Igny, he was killed by a
rebellious monk.

goodness.

i know that it was not altogether uncommon (though certainly not frequent)
among Benedictine abbots of earlier periods (e.g., Abbo of Fleury, murdered
in 1004 at La Reole, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbo_of_Fleury ).

but how common was such doings among Cistercians particularly, and even later
12th c. Benedictine abbots generally?

Igny must have gone downhill more than somewhat, since (Bl.) Gerric's time.

such an event must have scandalized the then Archbishop of Reims, Henry of
France (Louis VII's kid brother) himself a former Cistercian, back in the
1140s.
