Hello Maddy,
I have had a look at the petition, and it seems to me that this is a bigger, cultural heritage issue, that requires the support of those outside of UK as well. I think you might get a very good response if you set up a petition that permitted signatures from around the world. The cultural heritage of the UK has ties with many people living, working and studying globally. My thoughts….Harriet.

from UK
churches
Dear Maddy,
I've just added my name. For me it's personal. My parish church (the one I worship in not the one in whose parish I live) - just over 100 years old - has had at least three lots of thefts of lead from the roof in the last 3 years. The leaks are now doing dire additional damage inside. The insurance company has reduced the percentage of compensation it will pay and we have failed to get permission to re-roof with an artificial fabric "lead" look-alike. We do not have the funds to carry out the repairs properly. It's a nightmare but we are not as badly off as other churches in the diocese who have suffered similarly.
I have moments when I would like to get mediaeval and hang the thieves either for the theft of goods worth more than forty shillings ( £2.00 ) or for sacrilege .......

Please forgive me, list co-ordinators, if this is inappropriate - but it's a topic which must be of concern to us all. Current high prices for metals have meant that churches in the UK (and presumably elsewhere) are suffering devastating thefts - not just lead roofs but copper from lightning conductors and even power cables. There is even the dreadful possibility of monumental brasses being taken for their metal content. An e-petition has been started at
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/406
for better regulation of the scrap metal industry. It's obviously geared to UK residents but I think others can sign as well. We need a lot more signatures before it gets debated in Parliament.
