As part of its inaugural meeting, the Suburban Cultures Network will host a one-day symposium on ‘The Sensory Suburb’ at NUI Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland. The aim of this event is to provide a forum for explorations of the cultures of the suburbs, paying particular attention to our sensory engagements with the suburbs. Suburbs present us with myriad landscapes, soundscapes, technoscapes and culturescapes, which inform both the social imaginary of creative artists and the everyday lived experience of suburbanites. Through an interdisciplinary lens, this symposium will offer an opportunity to reflect, analyse and respond to the sensory palate of suburbia. Confirmed keynote speakers: Professor Mark Gottiender, SUNY Buffalo; Professor Joanne Jacobson, Yeshiva University NYC Reading by Booker prize winning author Roddy Doyle Registration for the day: £30 (£25 for postgraduates) including light lunch and refreshments Call for Presentations/Posters We welcome posters or short presentations for a ‘salon’ session to be held as part of the symposium on the morning of 9 December, for those whose work dovetails with the Cultures of the Suburbs Network and who would like to be involved in this unique interdisciplinary forum. The salon will provide an opportunity for presenters to showcase work in progress that connects with the theme of ‘The Sensory Suburb’. Each presenter will be able to speak for a maximum of 10 minutes, incorporating up to 5 PowerPoint slides. Audio-visual presentations are also welcome. If you would like to participate in this salon session, please submit a 250 word proposal for your presentation/poster by Friday 21 October 2011 to Jill Sullivan, Network Research Facilitator at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> We have a limited number of travel bursaries (£100 each) available to postgraduate students who would like to participate in the symposium and salon.
