This course explains the current, common technologies used within the production workflow:- manuscript submission systems; file delivery mechanisms (such as FTP); PDF and PDF-X; use of SGML and XML for online products. A portion of the day will be dedicated to a 'clinic' where delegates are invited to bring along specific problems for discussion. Programme: • Manuscript submission systems - overview • File delivery protocols such as FTP • Common typesetting systems • XML/SGML and DTDs • Preflighting software - what is it and who should do it? • Common problems with PDFs • Best practice: housekeeping; file naming; directory structures • Standard image formats and their uses; resolutions for various applications • Delegate clinic for discussion of production-related problems (delegates will be encouraged to submit questions in advance) Learning objectives - by the end of the course delegates will be able to: Understand the types of manuscript submission and typesetting systems available; comprehend the basics of XML/SGML and DTDs; recognise the benefits of pre-flighting software, be aware of common problems with PDFs; and understand best practice for general housekeeping of electronic files.
