I'd add in "Asking questions"! It seems to me that the most fundamental idea that students need to get their heads round is that the main business of universities (and that means students as well as academics) is to ask questions about the world and about the basis for what we currently think we know, in order to generate new knowledge and insights. So any discussion designed to help with the transition into university should include getting them to generate interesting/productive questions about the world or their particular bit of it, and to think about what makes some questions more interesting or productive than others.
