October 2011

New CCDS Board Members

On September 23-24, 2011, CCDS held its 2011 Annual General Meeting and a Board meeting. We welcome our new Board members Donna Thomson of Ottawa, Alexis Davis of Vancouver, and John VanWalleghem of Winnipeg. A full list of the Board members can be found at http://disabilitystudies.ca/contact-ccds/<http://disabilitystudies.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=df5d9ac8ba28f343cbc6a6135&id=7983e26a3c&e=b28e49ed3a>

At our Board meeting, Board members had constructive discussions for the 2012-2017 CCDS Strategic Plan, including some specific results and activities, and how CCDS could measure its progress and success. The Board discussed how CCDS can support community-based research, advance of disability studies, utilize the knowledge generated to influence policy and practices, and better represent community interests in disability-related policy research.

CCDS plans to release its 2012-2017 Strategic plan in December 2011.

CCDS Welcomes Exchange Students

CCDS welcomes Ghanaian exchange students Harriet Baffoe, Doris Boateng, Abigail Larbi, and Kingsley Mort back to Winnipeg. The students are enrolled in the PhD Social Work program at the University of Manitoba. The students had previously taken Masters courses at the University of Manitoba and did field placements at CCDS. CCDS is proud to continue this collaboration with the University of Manitoba.

Women and Gender Issues: Partnership for Research on Ugandan Women with Disabilities (PROUWD) – Phase II

The CCDS/The National Union of Women with Disabilities in Uganda (NUWODU) research project Partnership for Research on Ugandan Women with Disabilities (PROUWD) – Phase II is now complete. Researchers interviewed 52 people with disabilities, primarily women, and discovered significant and important information on the lived experiences of women and girls with disabilities in Uganda.

Our analysis identified five key themes in the data, with a sixth over-arching theme.
1. Policy and Program Development and Implementation
2. Financial Stability
3. Accessibility
4. Education
5. Family
6. Attitudes

More detailed information about this project can be found at: http://disabilitystudies.ca/prouwd/. The project's narrative report will be posted soon.

Leading Disability Studies Globally: Disability, Development and Diversity

Piloting of the Disability, Development and Diversity Teacher Toolkit is ongoing in several schools in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The Toolkit has also been shared with a number of schools internationally. Schools in Egypt, Korea, Uganda, and Ukraine have been invited to use the material and share comments on the project blog.

In October, the project researchers will be presenting the Toolkit to middle school teachers at the Saskatchewan Middle Years Association Conference and SAGE Coordinated Conference (Manitoba Middle Years Association).

Project information, including all materials, can be found on the project website at: http://disabilitystudies.ca/ddd-home/<http://disabilitystudies.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=df5d9ac8ba28f343cbc6a6135&id=47d55214e6&e=b28e49ed3a>.

Save the Date - Disability Research Forum

The Disabilities Issues Office (DIO) and its allies, including CCDS, are in the early stages of planning a fall Manitoba Disability Research Forum. The goal is to bring together individuals who are conducting disability-related social research with those in a position to benefit from the results. This includes research already undertaken and suggestions from policy analysts and practitioners about the agenda for future research. The focus is social and community-based research rather than medical research.

The Forum is scheduled for November 17. The location will be announced on our website in early October.
