Hello,

Brief feedback about my expenses claiming saga, for anyone interested
(I did say that I'd compile emails sent to me). After quoting the
below figures sent in on previous emails, the UCU branch president
said that this was probably just something that had been overlooked,
and that he would attempt to raise it.

Well, fingers crossed, but nice to not get a "what do bikes need
expenses for?" reply.

Bristol City Council 20p/mile

University of Central Lancashire 20p per mile

University of Chester
a)Travel within 50 miles of University premises by private car – see below.
b)All travel in excess of 50 miles at public transport rates (bus and
2nd class rail fares).
Private Cars: 36p per mile (payable only if a university vehicle is
not available).
Bicycles: 20p per mile (within 5 miles of university premises).

University of Cumbria business journeys: 45p per mile car; 5p per mile
per car passenger; 20p per mile bicycle.

University of East London: 20p/mile for cycling, also the car rate
(40p) goes down after a certain level.

Open University, 12p a mile by bike, or 38.5 by car. (My original
issue was that HMRC guidance [www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/travel.htm] says
that you can claim back from tax up to 20p for bikes or 45p in cars.
Except I don't pay tax, because it's a stipend. So me cycling gets 60%
of the HMRC rate, and drivers get 85%.)
