Shared Worlds Oslo – A Minding Animals Pre-Conference Event

This Minding Animals Pre-conference Event, 14-15 October 2011, is
focused upon the way in which humans and non-human animals co-create the
shared worlds which they jointly inhabit. This way of looking asserts
that both are actors in complex encounters and co-constitute the other.

Speakers:
- Rod Bennison (Hunter Valley, Australia): "Considering the exploitation
of animals in sport, and understanding the ‘Sport of Queens’"
- Tora Holmberg (Uppsala, Sweden): "Sharing the lives of many: Urban
controversies over animal hoarding and animal rescue"
- Liv Emma Thorsen (Oslo, Norway): "Shared worlds? Animals in Natural
History Museums"
- Nelly Mäekivi (Tartu, Estonia): "(Mis)perceptions in Shared
Environments: The Case of Zoos"

There will be roundtables on (1) the shared worlds of humans and horses
(participants include Lynda Birke, Kristin Oma Armstrong, Rhys Evans)
and (2) the shared worlds of humans and wolves (participants include
Runar Næss, Antonio Poleo and Ketil Skogen), and a workshop on the
relation between academia and activism.

Minding Animals acts as a bridge between academia and advocacy, and
provides an avenue for the transdisciplinary field of Animal Studies to
be more responsive to the protection of animals, environmentalism
included. Minding Animals aims to enable discourse between the various
interests within this rapidly developing transdisciplinary field in ways
that will improve the status of non-human animals.
