Secondary roles are assigned automatically through snapshot, from data in our SIS, where the roles (faculty) are defined.

We use secondary roles to provide Faculty-specific tabs, which we delegate control of content to the Faculty administrators. Uptake has been limited, but it has at least allowed Faculties a presence in Blackboard.

One thing to note – sub-tabs cannot be targeted at secondary roles.

Cheers Arthur, maybe a thought for the start of our next academic year, with testing time.

Has anyone else had any experience with using the Primary role and secondary role, for the benefit of personalising tabs and such for users?

Not really, the only time we get errors is when we feed in incorrect data.

It has been used here successfully for approx. 5 years. There was minimal resetting when we transferred from v7.3 to 9.1 in the summer of 2010.

Many thanks for this, I have a funny feeling that this would cause some issues at our institution, due to how some staff are using the system. As well as the system we need to connect to.

It does seem very efficient though, any problems?

Hi Tyrone,

We have not managed to find a way to bulk enrol users into secondary institution roles within the interface.

We have however created a bit of powershell script to do this. It basically takes an input file of user ID’s, prompts for a role and then call som SQl to update the table user_roles.

Dear All,

I am finally having a bit more of a play with Blackboard 9.1, specifically the community settings involving primary role, secondary role and the different tabs / group tabs.

I can see where I can set the primary role, under bulk enrol, but not the secondary role.

If this can’t be done via bulk enrol, can I set a default secondary role anywhere?

This would be great as we want to provide some basic differences to certain students and maybe staff, with their views and access.
