English Drawings & Watercolours 1600-1900: National Gallery of Scotland
By Christopher Baker

The Book
The collection of English drawings and watercolours in the National Gallery of Scotland is rich, diverse and in many respects little known. This beautifully designed and generously illustrated scholarly catalogue for the first time makes its full scope and importance clear. It includes over 2,000 works by more than 250 artists and 460 full colour illustrations, many of which have never previously been published. It is a key reference work for a wide range of enthusiasts for British art, including art historians, students, collectors, dealers, artists and picture researchers.

Broad in scope, the collection ranges from the art of the Stuart court in the early seventeenth century to the late Victorian period – from Isaac Oliver to Lord Leighton. Significant early works include examples of the draughtsmanship of Inigo Jones, Sir Peter Lely and Sir Godfrey Kneller, while eighteenth century highlights range from sketches Paul Sandby made in Scotland at the outset of his career, to outstanding examples of Grand Tour imagery by John Robert Cozens. The Romantic or ‘Golden Age’ of watercolour painting lies at the heart of the collection and is illustrated by splendid examples of the work of William Blake, John Sell Cotman, Thomas Girtin and J.M.W. Turner.
