Library Support Assistant

 

Salary £13,567 a year, with potential progression to £15,844 a year

 

The Cadbury Research Library: Special Collections, University of Birmingham and Warwickshire County Record Office are seeking to appoint a 12 month Library Support Assistant. The successful candidate will spend approximately 6 months working with the University of Birmingham and 6 months working with Warwickshire County Council. The administrative base for this post will be the University of Birmingham, and the successful post holder will be required to arrange their own transport to Warwick for the period of the contract when they will be working with Warwickshire County Council.

 

The post holder will be part of a small team of Library Support Assistants, working alongside other colleagues within Special Collections, Cadbury Research Library.  The post holder’s main duties will be divided between working on reception, retrieval, and reprographics.  Library Support Assistants are responsible for providing an excellent public service whilst on reception, registering new researchers and dealing with telephone enquiries.  Whilst on retrieval, the post holder will be required to handle and shelve material which may vary in size, weight and fragility, and will involve working at height.  The post holder will also be required to undertake a range of activities to assist with cataloguing related activities such as numbering and listing of documents and inputting data into CALM software; book related tasks; and undertaking basic conservation tasks.

 

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications, experience of working in a customer service environment, excellent numeracy and alphabetical skills, a pleasant manner when dealing with customers and colleagues and experience of similar work in a library, archive, or office environment in a customer focused role. Experience of reprographics work with digital images and use of Photoshop is also preferred.

 

This unique partnership will allow the candidate to gain experience of archive and heritage work both within a University and a Local Government environment. Although this post is not specifically designed to be a graduate trainee placement it would be suitable for candidates who are interested in gaining valuable work experience in the sector to enable them to pursue their interest in a career in archives through application to a postgraduate qualification.
