The second seminar of Michaelmas Term will be held on Thursday 20 October - starting at 2:15 - in the Lecture Theatre, 1 South Parks Road. Week 2: 20 October Speaker: Brian Ripley<http://stats.ox.ac.uk/people/academic_staff/brian_ripley>, Department of Statistics, University of Oxford Title: 'Getting R to Dance to Your Tune' Abstract: R is now a very widely used package in statistics and many other quantitative disciplines: it is approaching the status of a 'lingua franca'. Reading mailing lists and blogs often gives the impression that people are wrestling with R to get it to do what they want. Computational statistics is an under-appreciated discipline: skill is needed both to what to ask R to do and to understand what it did with your instructions. The talk will show some (non-technical) examples of getting R to do what you want ... fast enough (as one of my recent DPhil students appreciated when a 370x speedup was achieved on his model fitting).
