As a member of the Snowball and Hell Club (an Equality and Diversity  professional) I almost welcome Philip Davies’ Bill, for the following reasons: -

·         Equality and diversity, like all other social development needs regular validation and verification.  This is done through robust debate.  Despite the setbacks in our area, equality and diversity has been accepted and expanded over the last twenty years.  It may require that necessary challenge, such as this, in order for it to be revalidated and re-verified.

·         Nothing has a right to exist and if those who are concerned about equality and diversity do not fight or fight effectively then, quite rightly, Philip Davies proposals will go through.

·         The detail in the Bill is so woolly that I would posit it is almost impossible to define what AA and PA means in the context in which it is laid out in the Bill.  Were the Bill to make it to statute then the Equality Act may have to be repealed.

·         The proposals affect so many groups that it would be toxic, were it to be supported by a political party, and finally

·         Philip Davies may have no intention for his Bill becomes law but instead put it forward as a pathfinder for more effective but less high prolife measures aimed at weakening equality and diversity legislation.

Hi

The bill is sponsored by Philip Davies, MP for Shipley. This link to a page on his website gives some insight to his views on the equality and diversity : -  http://www.philip-davies.org.uk/newsshow.aspx?id=13&ref=1451

Snowball and Hell are the words usually associated with the chances of Private Members Bills but in the climate engendered by the Red Tape Challenge and with apparently serious consideration being given to doing away with large areas of employment protection and maternity/paternity benefits (http://www.personneltoday.com/articles/2011/10/17/58044/government-warned-on-employment-law-changes.html ), who knows....
