The afternoon session of the AQMLM 2011 Symposium "Quality and Patient Safety" (to be held at Austin Court, Birmingham, Monday 7th November 2011) will focus on the "Assessment of Competency".

Dr Lance Sandle will speak on the "Assessment of Clinical Competency"

Abstract: Dr Sandle is Director of Professional Standards at the Royal College of Pathologists and is College lead for CPD, Clinical Audit and Revalidation. The Professional Standards Unit also advises Fellows and employers with performance problems. He will discuss the assessment of performance and competence in the context of Revalidation, the mechanisms for performance review by the College and the escalation of these processes by regulatory bodies, and the impact Revalidation may have on these processes.

Mr Osama Ammar will speak on the "Assessment of Scientific Competency" (Mr Ammar replaces Steve Barnett)

Abstract: Mr Ammar is Head of Education, Training and Professional Standards for the Academy of Healthcare Science, having previously been Head of Educational Development at the HPC. Because the way scientific competence is perceived and assessed is going through change as a result of the Modernising Scientific Careers programme and the introduction of the new commissioning environment, his presentation will highlight where and how assessment of scientific competence will take place in education and training programmes based on the MSC curricula and outline how the definition and expectations for scientific competence may be broadening as a result of the introduction of the new commissioning architecture.

After tea, there will be a Panel discussion on the "How Do We Assess Managerial Competency?", which is likely to be lively and interesting!
