Researchers found that a 45-minute bout of vigorous exercise can boost a person's calorie burn for up to 14 hours. . Their study, published last week by the American College of Sports Medicine, examined energy expenditure among 10 male participants, ages 22-33, three of whom were obese. . During one session, the participants, who were in a metabolic chamber that allows for the measurement of oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production and energy expenditure, were mostly inactive. Using the metabolic chamber required the number of study participants to be limited. . During the second session, participants followed the same routine, but they cycled vigorously on a stationary bike for 45 minutes late in the morning. . "We found that 45 minutes of vigorous exercise caused 190 additional calories to be burned later in the day while the participant was at rest," said David Nieman, the study's lead investigator. "The calories burned after exercise represent a 37 percent increase in net energy expended compared to no exercise." . Nieman said the findings may have implications for people trying to lose or manage their weight. . The challenge for many people is to work up to a level at which they can participate in 45 minutes of vigorous exercise, said Luke Shepherd, fitness director at Prairie Life Fitness at 132nd Street and West Center Road. He said they likely would have to start by doing interval training, in which they would add periods of high-intensity exercise into their workouts and progress to the "vigorous" level. . .
