RESEARCH ENGINEER / SENIOR RESEARCH ENGINEER

(Multiple Full-Time Positions Available)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking qualified candidates for multiple Research Engineers and/or Senior Research Engineers for the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) located at the Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL), located in Rantoul, Illinois. The Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer positions offer exciting opportunities for individuals with superb technical knowledge of equipment, especially servo-hydraulics, and organizational skills to conduct and/or manage technical testing and research equipment and laboratory facilities at the ATREL facility. Responsibilities for both position(s) include: conducting experiments in the laboratories and in the field following established safety guidelines; determining and maintaining equipment needs for experiments; coordinating with sponsors, industry representatives and researchers to ensure project goals are achieved; training researchers and students on testing and design procedures for safe laboratory practices and reliable test results; designing research testing plans, and performing technical testing, and data analysis; developing and delivering presentations of research findings to sponsors; and, maintaining a clean and organized laboratory. In addition to these responsibilities, the Senior Research Engineer position(s) will be responsible for managing the technical testing procedures and facility operations and developing the research protocols used within the facility.

The minimum requirement for both positions includes excellent communication and organizational skills, the ability to handle multiple duties simultaneously, and experience in one or more of the following areas:

 • Hot-mix asphalt testing and/or pavement testing

 • Independent setup and execution of laboratory experiments on civil engineering materials including: testing of soils and aggregate, Portland Cement Concrete (PCC), and Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA).

 • Testing asphalt binder using SuperPave testing equipment.

 • Applying principles of volumetric asphalt mix design, including the use of different compactors (such as Gyratory).

 • Operational knowledge of hydraulic systems.

 Candidates for the Senior Research Engineer position(s) must also have experience in one or more of the following:

 • Operational proficiency in using hydraulic systems for civil engineering material testing which could include performing tests such as fatigue, creep, permanent deformation, and resilient modulus.

 • Experience with laboratory data acquisition systems, instrumentation and programming.

 • Experience working with faculty and students in an academic setting.

 Candidates for the Research Engineer position(s) must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

 Candidates for the Senior Research Engineer position(s) must have a Master’s degree in Engineering or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience, including experience in an accredited laboratory. They must hold an Illinois Professional Engineer License or successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Preferred requirements include Illinois DOT QC/QA certifications for Hot Mix Asphalt (Levels 1, 2 & 3) and Aggregate and/or operational knowledge of servo-hydraulic systems.

The Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer positions are full-time academic professional positions appointed on a 12-month service basis with standard university benefits, as well as professional development opportunities.
