Seminar & Workshop: Adapting Interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders: What are the strategies that work?

Associate Professor Kate Sofronoff (School of Psychology, The University of Queensland)

Venue: Room 2.21 Research Beehive, Old Library Building, Newcastle University
Date: Friday 23rd September 2011
Time: 14:00 - 16:30

Programme:

Seminar (2-3pm)
The first purpose of this seminar is to provide an outline of the evidence base for intervention strategies used with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  There will be discussion of the strength of evidence that is available for strategies thought to be useful for children with ASD.  Following this we will look at a number of programs that have been developed based on what we know about these best practice principles.  There will be a brief overview of a series of programs founded in cognitive-behavioural theory. This will include a parenting program; an anxiety management program; an anger management program and a social-emotional skills program. There is an emphasis on the use of positive strategies, of flexibility and tailoring the strategies and programs to the individual child, the importance of parent involvement, the use of visual supports and so on. The current evidence base for these programs will also be provided for discussion.

Refreshment break 3-3.30pm

Workshop (3.30-4.30pm)
The seminar will be followed by an hour long workshop during which Kate will discuss and demonstrate practicalities for setting up a CBT group with young people with ASD and also outline some of the strategies that can be used.

All are welcome to attend either the seminar or the workshop, or both, but registration is required for catering purposes.  Please register online using the following form: http://forms.ncl.ac.uk/view.php?id=2179
