Sky sponged in with exceeding white, softening as it mixes. Scratches in the underlying board brought out by paint running in. Up to the first few degrees above the horizon, it’s brighter than the sea; a solitary boat a single mark in an exposed patch of gesso. There, nothing has changed pictorially, ever, a calm sea a calm sea. Close under the quay, there’s thick shadow broken by an all-white sailing boat. Birds feed on submerging sand. A flaw in the baseboard might be a chain or rope visible through the shallow water. Marker buoys wobble very slightly among the floating gulls. Another wash of light forgets what it is laid on.
