medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture goodness, i seem to have inadvertently hit on a Mother Load. From: John Dillon <[log in to unmask]> >In a post to this list in 2006 providing some bibliography (mostly on ancient pagan incubation) George Verzoco adduced some probable instances from modern Italy. well, that Verzoco guy, he posts so much modren eyetalian stuff on this list, i can barely stand to see it. >See <http://tinyurl.com/4x8yf29>. "The main aspects of incubation were: night sleep in a holy place; visionary dreams during that sleep; and resulting curative miracles. [with extensive bibliography]" as it happens, Jim has recently come across a reference to the [attempted?] *suppression* of this practice in some proceedings of a 14th c. synod at Chartres --and i believe that he has some (earlier) sources which refer to "pilgrims" sleeping in the crypt of the cathedral, to be near the "Puits des Saints-Forts," a ju-ju filled sous-terre locale there.
