There has been a couple of postings on LIS-LINK and LIS-PUB-LIBS about
library systems for small libraries that 'don't cost much'. There are some
great systems around and some vendors with links are listed on CILIP 2010
'Showcase event' web page
http://www.cilip.org.uk/whats-on/events/Pages/lms-showcases-2010.aspx . Of
the vendors listed those that focus on working with smaller libraries are:-

Adlib Informations Systems Ltd
Amlib/ANS Ltd
Bailey Solutions
EOS International
IS Oxford
PTFS Europe Ltd (provides support, implementation and dev for open source
Koha)
Softlink Europe
Soutron Ltd

You could also add Microlibrarian (popular in schools)
http://www.microlib.co.uk/ and Access-it (also popular in schools)
http://www.accessitsoftware.com/

The systems provided by these vendors do not necessarily lack in terms of
functionality and may outperform so called 'bigger' systems in many regards.

As for costs the purchase price of the software may well be the smallest
factor in overall costs. For example Koha software is open source and free
of charge but there are still costs in terms of implementation, training etc

Btw the 2011 CILIP showcase event is soon (4th November) so offers a good
opportunity to evaluate some of the systems.

Subject: ILS for a small learned society library

Northamptonshire Record Society library currently has a hand-written card
catalogue and a fairly obscure classification system for its c.4,000 items,
mostly books, pamphlets and serials.

I'm looking for a management system that can deliver a catalogue which is
easily searchable by members (no limit on keywords), offers automatic
accession numbers and authority files to maintain consistency among
cataloguers and even perhaps access to BL bibliographic data. Oh, and it
mustn't cost much. I would love to hear the experiences of other librarians
who have hauled small specialist collections into the 21st century. Any
recommendations, caveats?

Thanks for any help you can offer me

Subject: Alternative library management systems for community run libraries

We have a community looking to take over the running of the library but not
remain on our LMS. Anyone know any alternative cheap LMS systems? We already
have details of "Library Gold" from Cadomel Library Systems.
thanks
