Short Course on “U-Th-Pb Geochronology by LA-ICPMS:
Applications to Detrital Geochronology and Petrochronology”
Offered by:
George Gehrels (University of Arizona)
Bradley Hacker (UC Santa Barbara)
Andrew Kylander-Clark (UC Santa Barbara)

We are pleased to offer a one-day, pre-AGU short course that presents an overview of the theory, methods, and applications of U-Th-Pb geochronology by LA-ICPMS. The short course will be structured around the following topics:

* Basics of the U-Th-Pb system
* Acquisition of geochronologic data by LA-ICPMS
* Applications to detrital mineral studies
* Acquisition of trace-element data or complementary isotopic data by LA-ICPMS
* Applications to petrochronology of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks

A workbook will be provided.

The course is intended for graduate students with a basic familiarity with geochronology. We also welcome participation from undergraduate students interested in geochronologic research, and from experts in the field willing to share their expertise.

The short course will be offered Sunday, December 4, 2011, from 1 PM to 9 PM, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Snacks will be provided during the afternoon and evening sessions, and there will be a break for dinner from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
