Deputy Director

Part Time : 18.25 (50%)
The appointment will be on UCL Grade 8. The salary range will be £39,668 - £46,822 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Salary pro-rata for part time vacancies

Duties and Responsibilities
The appointment will be based in the new Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, whose aim is to provide a focus for UCL's risk and disaster reduction (RDR) activities, which span earth and space science, mathematics and statistics, engineering and development planning, population health, anthropology, ethics and laws. The Deputy Director, working alongside the Director, will play a key role in developing and implementing the long-term strategy for the new Institute and in achieving its objectives. They will operate at a high level to ensure that new research, programmatic, teaching and learning initiatives in the area of RDR are integrated across disciplines, faculties and departments at UCL. In 2012-13, the Deputy Director will launch the IRDR's new masters teaching programme and contribute to it.

Key Requirements
Applicants will have a PhD in a relevant subject and have knowledge about issues in risk and disaster reduction. They will have the ability to liaise with senior management, academic staff and outside stakeholders, and to independently develop new projects with internal and external partners. Applicants will be able to coordinate the IRDR masters teaching programme.

Duties and Responsibilities
The appointments will be based in the new Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, whose aim is to provide a focus for UCL's risk and disaster reduction (RDR) activities, which span earth and space science, mathematics and statistics, engineering and development planning, population health, anthropology, ethics and laws.

Appointments will be at lecturer level and made to the following research foci: i) hydrometeorological disasters (i.e., windstorms, floods and droughts), ii) geological disasters (i.e., earthquakes, volcanoes and related hazards) and linking the two, iii) disaster risk reduction (population health impacts, infection control, and social reconstruction), but successful candidates should be able to contribute to a multi-hazard approach.

Key Requirements
Applicants will have a PhD in a relevant discipline with backgrounds in earth and space sciences, mathematics and statistics, or engineering and the built environment. Candidates must be highly motivated, with interdisciplinary and international experience and are likely to have held prestigious research fellowships, or have a track record in winning research council funding, and have successful publications in high-impact journals. Successful candidates would be expected to assume leadership roles in the IRDR and work with international partners to achieve research impact.

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £31,905 - £38,594 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Duties and Responsibilities
The appointments will be based in the new Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, whose aim is to provide a focus for UCL's risk and disaster reduction activities, which span earth and space science, mathematics and statistics, engineering and development planning, population health, anthropology, ethics and laws.


Post holders will be appointed to conduct in depth research of international quality that enhances, complements and/or extends current activity in the Institute in the following areas:

  1. Hydrometeorological hazards and in particular droughts and water security.
  2. Geological hazards (i.e., earthquakes and volcanoes), especially integrating experimental, observational and modelling approaches.
  3. Major engineering hazards, in particular with impact in polar environments.
  4. Post-disaster population health, infection control, triage and health infrastructure.

The posts are funded for 3 years in the first instance.

Key Requirements
Applicants will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, a background in earth and space sciences, mathematics and statistics, or engineering and the built environment, and the ability to undertake independent fieldwork when appropriate.  The appointees will have a record of published research in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
