Hallo all,

I am designing an academic module called Disability Rights and Criminal Justice for third year undergrads in England.

It will cover the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as well as UK human rights and equality law and practice, including responsibilities of public bodies.  It is obviously a very broad topic, to include hate crime, protection of witnesses, treatment of suspects and offenders, the prison service etc…  so will need to focus.  The students already have some human rights/criminal justice knowledge (though not disability-related), and will probably go on to work in the criminal justice system.

I have some competence in human rights/equality, but little experience of the English criminal justice system.  Can anyone give me some guidance?  What topics/areas would you focus on?

Any ideas for materials would be useful too.

Many thanks

Tabitha
