Call for Papers - extended deadline 21 September 2011 FLOW: a conference in two parts FLOW 2, the second of the FLOW conferences will be hosted by the Landscape Architecture program, Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne, Australia, from the 8th to the 10th of February, 2012. The FLOW 2 conference invites theoretical and practice based scholarship that focuses on interiors and landscapes that arise from the emergence of increasingly fluid and virtual spatial environments. In 2011 FLOW 1 introduced a historical perspective to the transitional and intermediary relationships between interiors and landscapes and was hosted by the Modern Interiors Research Centre (MIRC) in collaboration with the Landscape Interface Studio, Kingston University, London. Recent interior focused conferences such as Interior Spaces in Other Places (IDEA 2010) and FLOW 1 (MIRC 2011) explored interior and landscape as they relate to the transference of thoughts and ideas across disciplinary boundaries and cultures. Themes from these conferences broadly investigated theories of historic and contemporary space including the transitional spaces of the modern interior as intermediate zones of occupation and performance that expand into the territories of exterior space. Building upon these earlier enquiries FLOW 2 (2012) is concerned with the theoretical and practice based examination of historical and contemporary interiors and landscapes, particularly where new ideologies emerge that are shaped by corporate, political and ecological initiatives. Fluid urban conditions such as supermodern public spaces – international airports, shopping malls, urban plazas and post industrial parks – render problematic the relatively simple concepts of ‘inside’ and ‘outside’, ‘private’ and ‘public’, ‘domestic’ and ‘non-domestic’, and place and ‘non-place’. Likewise global concerns such as climate variability, economic instability and transnationalism are similarly informing discussion about design, occupation and conservation, particularly where local ecologies and practices are impacted by the flow of change Thematic prompts for FLOW 2 seek research papers that propose critical adjacencies to transcend traditional dualities in order to explore the mobile ground of interior and exterior space and place. Fluid territories and altered intersections Corporate culture and its effects Spatial and material transitions Urban migration across cultures and geographies Performance topographies Continuous interiority Cinematic landscapes and virtual domains Global experience across forms and processes For FLOW 2 we welcome proposals for 20 minute conference papers and proposals for exhibition of creative works of the theory and practice. The latter creative work may be speculative, live or realised projects capable of exhibition. We welcome submissions and collaborations from practice. An abstract of 300 words should be submitted to [log in to unmask] (subject header: FLOW 2). Please include a separate biographical paragraph (maximum 200 words) including your institutional affiliation, position, contact details, and the title of your paper. This will appear in the conference programme if your paper is selected. The aim is to publish refereed papers from both FLOW 1 and 2 conferences in a single publication.
