There's been an interesting discussion on twitter recently about the many authorities who are refusing to answer requests if they don't contain a personal name. Many of them quote the IC guidance here

but fail to note the part which deals with company names.

My response to that would be; how do you know that he isn't Michael Mouse?
I refer to our colleague on here "Jethro R. Binks" - I thought that was a made a up name for months until it turned out he was a real person. Sorry Jethro!
I always advise that unless there are other reasons to refuse, then ignore (within reason) the name and provide the information. I think the ICO "advice" on this was not very helpful when it came out.

I note it says that it must be the individual's real name - how do you prove that as there is nothing in the Act about proving name. Obviously if they used Mickey Mouse then we can say that it is not a valid request. However if they used e.g. "John Smith" how can you turn that down?

Jonathan, thanks for the list. One of the challenges, with Twitter, is finding and following links that do not tweet very often. For example, one will find specialist lawyers who may tweet occasionally on specific cases, but not in general. For example Adam Wagner at UK Human rights blog.

Another good source, on twitter, are the journalists who specialize on privacy or information rights issues. I cannot think of any off the top of my head beyond Martin Rosenbaum as they often cover other topics.
A final caveat, is that tweets can be eclectic and people, like me (for example), can tweet on a range of topics beyond data protection. :)
Be sure to use the hashtag #dpa as that will help you track tweets and allow others to pick up your tweets on that topic.
