Hi Sarah, Hmmm that I don't think you can do, but definitely worth an enhancement request if you have a use case. As date restriction is technically an adaptive release rule and a content area is no different to a folder so it shouldn't be too hard to add the functionality in the future. Remember if you hide a top level content area, its hierarchical, so users cannot access any of the content within it, even if that is linked from other areas of the course.
