Subject: Equality Act 2010: Specific Duties England

ECU_press-logo.jpg

Dear Colleagues,

The specific duties for England of the equality duty of the Equality Act 2010 came into force on Saturday 10 September.  They were debated in the House of Commons in July and in the House of Lords last week, and passed through both Houses without amendment.

The specific duties require higher education institutions to publish:

The information published should include, in particular, information relating to employees (for bodies with 150 or more staff) and others affected by their policies and practices, including students.

Ministers have committed to reviewing the specific duties in two years’ time, to check that they are delivering the transparency and accountability that they hope to achieve.

ECU will now revise its briefing on the public sector equality duty in England to reflect the new regulations. Further details about the Equality Duty and specific duties are available on the Home Office website: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/equalities/equality-act/equality-duty/ . Further information on ECU’s work on the Equality Act can be found at http://www.ecu.ac.uk/subjects/equality-act-2010 .

Kind regards

Ellen
