[apologies for cross posting]

Dear all,

The DataTrain project has come to an end. We have written and piloted
two discipline specific courses on research data management for
post-graduate students in Social Anthropology and Archaeology and they
are now available on-line. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone
who worked on the project, especially Cameron Petrie from the Department
of Archaeology, Sian Lazar from the Department of Social Anthropology
and Stuart Jeffrey from the Archaeology Data Service (ADS). Sian and
Cameron gave us the opportunity to pilot the courses in their
departments and provided advice and feedback throughout. Stuart and the
ADS reviewed the Archaeology materials, and also agreed to host the
Archaeology courses on their website.

For the Archaeology course, we have produced a series of 8 modules,
which are designed to be run over four sessions. For each module there
is a PowerPoint presentation and a set of accompanying notes for course
instructors. The modules go through the process of building a data
management plan, and at the end, participants will have a data
management plan for their own research; hopefully the course
participants are finding that useful as they continue with their project.

For the Social Anthropology course, we have written three modules, each
with a comprehensive set of notes for course instructors and a
PowerPoint presentation to act as a focus for discussion. The first two
modules are targeted at post-graduate students who are about to embark
on fieldwork, while the third is aimed at students who are writing up.
Useful software, because it is relevant to both target audiences, is
given a separate set of notes and can be added to any of the modules.
There are also lists of useful reading and other online information.

The Archaeology materials are hosted by the Archaeology Data Service at:
http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/learning/DataTrain

The Social Anthropology materials are hosted by Cambridge University
Library, via DSpace@Cambridge; they can be found at:
http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/dataman/datatrain/socanthintro.html

We have released the materials online, but we are still interested in
receiving any further feedback from the MRD community. Also please let
us know if your department are planning on re-using the materials. Any
comments or observations would be greatly appreciated; these can be sent
to Elin Stangeland: [log in to unmask], DataTrain project manager (and
DSpace@Cambridge Repository Manager).

All the course materials are released under Creative Commons licence
BY-NC-SA – though please note that the modules also link to external
resources, which may be subject to other licences.

Best wishes,

The DataTrain team
