With apologies for cross posting.

The Edinburgh & SE Scotland Branch is pleased to announce the start of our Autumn SciScreen series this coming Monday at the Filmhouse, Lothian Road, Edinburgh.

Monday 5th September 2011, 5:45pm

“Forbidden Planet”

When Adams and his crew are sent to investigate the silence from a planet inhabited by scientists, he finds all but two have died. Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira have somehow survived a hideous monster which roams the planet. Unknown to Adams, Morbius has made a discovery, and has no intention of sharing it (or his daughter!) with anyone.

An introduction to the physics explored in the film will be given by Dr. Murphy, who will also lead a post-film discussion and answer any questions you may have.

Alex Murphy is a Reader of Physics at the University of Edinburgh.  He did his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Birmingham, gaining a PhD that explored the structure of the atomic nucleus. Since then, he has applied his knowledge to a range of astrophysical problems, ranging from the neutrinos emitted by supernovae, the thermonuclear reactions that drive astrophysical explosions, and searching for the elusive dark matter which is thought to make up some 90 per cent of the mass of the Galaxy.

Tickets are available from the Filmhouse Box Office (normal admission prices apply). www.filmhousecinema.com
