medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I feel I should know this but does anyone know of a
convenient list of the English and Welsh abbeys that were exempt from episcopal
visitation? I know of complete orders - Cistercian, Cluniac, mendicant,
etc but I am interested in the individual houses of non-exempt orders that
claimed this exemption.
I know that Westminster, St Albans and Bury St
Edmunds made these claims and think that Glastonbury, Evesham and Waltham may
also have done so but I am wondering if there is an absolute list to be found
anywhere. All my obvious text books say 'houses such as' or 'including'
and I would like a definitive list if one exists.
many thanks
