Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe: 2011 Country Reports

We are pleased to announce that the first outcomes of the ERC-funded project Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe have just been published on the project's website

http://mde.politics.ox.ac.uk/index.php/publications

These reports present an overview of the transformation and current state of each of our ten countries' media landscapes, that is Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, putting them into their demographic, economic and political context. They focus on print and electronic media market structures, on media regulation and the regulatory authorities, and on journalism culture.

The aim is to present this information in such a way as to facilitate comparison across the ten nations studied, which is one of the project's next tasks. The findings are based on existing academic sources, documents and corporate materials, and a series of elite interviews conducted in 2010. The reports were last updated in June-July 2011.

The MDCEE project is funded by the European Research Council and managed through the University of Oxford's Department of Politics and International Relations. Our core research team is based at St Antony's College, University of Oxford, and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. We are also working with a range of Visiting Fellows who specialise in media and democracy Central and Eastern Europe. For more information about the project, visit http://mde.politics.ox.ac.uk

Kind regards,
Vaclav Stetka (on behalf of the MDCEE project).
