The Department of Population Studies is seeking a Research & Computing Support Officer (RCSO) to join the Centre for Longitudinal Study Information and User Support (CeLSIUS) team which facilitates and promotes academic research using the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Longitudinal Study (LS).  The post will involve varied and interesting work, with opportunities to develop new skills and the possibility of pursuing methodological or substantive personal research interests relevant to the data set and service. 

The successful candidate will gain expertise in the use of an important national dataset and work with academic researchers at all levels on a variety of research projects. S/he will need extensive experience of using at least one, and preferably two, mainstream statistical packages (STATA, SPSS, SAS or R), excellent all round IT skills and an understanding of research processes. Knowledge of UK social statistics and of databases would be advantageous.  Excellent communication skills, the ability to prioritise tasks and use initiative, and a commitment to working in a team and following procedures related to data confidentiality are essential.

The appointment is available from 1 September 2011 and is currently funded until 31 July 2012. The appointment will be made on the Professional Support Pathway Grade 5, £30,915-£35,511 per annum, inclusive.  Benefits include membership of the USS Pension Scheme, 30 days annual leave plus an additional 6 fixed ‘Director’s Days’, family friendly policies and an interest-free season ticket loan scheme.
