ADOBE DIGITAL EDITIONS 1.8 IS AVAILABLE

Relevance: increasing accessibility of ebooks

AdobeĀ® Digital Editions is software often needed to buy, borrow and read ebooks and other digital publications. This has not been accessible.

The eagerly-awaited new version of Adobe Digital Editions was announced today.

It provides improved support for accessibility, with:
- enhanced keyboard support,
- additional text magnification,
- support for high-contrast mode color-switching, and
- interoperability with the UIAutomation accessibility API to allow screen readers to read ebooks.(use the link at the bottom of this email for more information about screen reader support)

Highlighted for thanks by Adobe in providing advice, guidance and feedback on early "builds" of this tool are RNIB's Richard Orme, Steve Griffiths, and several testers, along with others from the International Federation of the Blind, the American Foundation for the Blind, DAISY and IDPF.

Adobe acknowledge that those involved may have positive and negative things to say about this version and that there is additional work to do to make Digital Additions more accessible to more people, but they believe that this is a solid first step.
