From the website:

This site was created to further discussions set in motion in August 2010 by a debate on the LinkedIn facility maintained for CILIP, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. The discussion thread, started by Mark Field, was entitled The Fragmentation Death of the Information Professions. (A PDF compilation of that discussion is available from our Documents page.)

The aim? — to find common ground between organisations, large and small, whose members do jobs that might be considered ‘information-professional’ in nature. What are those jobs? An inclusive view includes information and knowledge managers, records managers, librarians, archivists, indexers, media creators and publishers, informaticians, Web designers – and computing specialists who by developing information management systems provide the infrastructure for modern information work.

The discussions started from a belief that these valuable skills and contributions are insufficiently appreciated by society, industry and government, and that the Information Professions suffer from the lack of a united voice and visibility.’

Dear John

Thank you for the reply, it's a shame you can't join in, as it's clear you have some ideas about what you think should be done.

Dear Ka-Ming and colleagues

Sorry I won’t be able to joint the discussion this week as I will be out.

However, it’s good to see this topic explored. There should be much closer collaboration across the different library sectors.

In fact there should be more collaboration across the sectors in which we operate library services e.g. Learning and Education: schools; public; college; university libraries etc or The Economy: academic; public; business etc or Community Wellbeing and Social Justice: public, prison, schools, academic, health and so on.

If your generation of librarians can energise imaginative approaches to the sharing of information, knowledge and learning and innovation in library and information provision that will make for a more sustainable future.

It is also the case that CILIP as a librarian membership body is the only national agency that could promote this thinking among dedicated and forward-looking members in all areas of our industry and to stakeholder communities beyond.

There other barriers too but more anon …

Have a good chat!

John
