Subject: Dayschool for local groups and HERs - Council for British Archaeology (WM)

Dear all,

I thought now might be a good time to get in touch with you regarding an event being put together by the CBA West Midlands group.  As part of our remit to facilitate access to information and life long learning, we are hosting a regional dayschool for local groups, societies, volunteers and anyone else with an interest.  The purpose of the day is to encourage local communities to take a more active role in the recording and management of their heritage.  The aims are:

·         To empower local groups.

·         To give them inspiration by providing examples of successful projects.

·         To give them the skills to undertake projects e.g. how to apply for funding, what information they can obtain from HERs and other sources.

·         To let them know how they can help HERs by working in partnership with them.

While the focus of the day is around HERs, there is obviously a broader message to impart in providing access to the whole range of heritage information that is available.  For this reason, part of the day will be devoted to holding an historic environment ‘fayre’ at which a variety of organisations will have displays and demonstrations, including local groups, national CBA, English Heritage, the region’s HERs, local Record Office, a funding advisor and the Portable Antiquities Scheme.  It is hoped that the day will be an opportunity to build improved links between the region’s Historic Environment services and local people and provide a catalyst for further discussion.  The event will be taking place at The Guildhall, Worcester and I’ve attached here our draft programme.

Best wishes,

Sheena
