Essential Medical Statistics (5 - 9 September 2011)

This course is designed for health care professionals or graduate students who already have some research experience and an understanding of basic statistical principles, and who wish to develop their statistical expertise. The sessions will be taught informally and interactively and will emphasise the practical application of statistical methods to real-life problems, rather than statistical theory. An understanding of the basic concepts is expected. The sessions will include time for students to explore and analyse data using a statistical package (SPSS). Teaching is led by Dr Richard Stevens, Senior Research Associate at the Department of Primary Health Care.  

The Practice of Evidence-Based Health Care (10-14 October 2011)
The course moduleintroduces the basic concepts and skills of Evidence-Based Health Care including formulation of a research question and critical review of research evidence. Teaching will be led by Dr Amanda Burls who is director of Postgraduate Programmes in Evidence-Based Health Care and a Senior Fellow of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, at the University of Oxford.

Introduction to Study Design and Research Methods (5-9 December 2011)

This course will introduce some of the more advanced concepts and skills of research design and how they relate to Evidence-Based Health Careincluding how to identify which study type has been used, and judge how this affects the interpretation of the results as well as how to establish criteria for accepting and rejecting good and bad evidence. Teaching will be led by Dr Amanda Burls who is director of Postgraduate Programmes in Evidence-Based Health Care and a Senior Fellow of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, at the University of Oxford.

Systematic Reviews (23 - 29 November 2011)         

This course will take the participants through the process of doing a systematic review, emphasising how and why this qualifies as scientific research. It will focus on the practicalities rather than the theory. The course will use a problem-based learning approach in which each participant brings a specific topic for a systematic review to discuss, justify and revise during the module. Teaching is led by Professor Mike Clarke, Director, MRC all-Ireland Hub for Trials Methodology Research.
