This post will be within the Northern Deanery & Newcastle University Institute of Health and Society, and is for up to four years. This is a locally funded matching post within the integrated academic training programme of the Northern Deanery.

The lectureship combines 50% specialist public health training and 50% academic (research and educationalist) training. Lectureships are aimed at those who are advanced in their specialty training, have completed a research doctorate or equivalent and show outstanding potential for continuing a career in academic public health.

Applicants may be medical graduates or graduates from other disciplines, and should hold a national training number in public health and have completed or submitted a PhD or MD in a relevant subject.

The academic component of the programme will be within the Institute of Health and Society (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/ihs/). The research programme will depend on the successful applicant’s interests and experience and the availability of training. Research within IHS has recently been organised into four themes: public health and applied health interventions; causes and patterns of disease; life course, development and ageing; and decision making and organisation of care. The Institute also houses two centres, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health (FUSE; www.fuse.ac.uk) and the North East Research Design Service. In addition to developing a research profile, the lecturer will also be expected to develop competence in teaching and supervision.

The Public Health training programme within the Northern Deanery covers North East England and includes a range of generalist and specialist locations.  Currently, these include including the 12 primary care trusts and local authorities together with specialised locations such as the Strategic Health Authority and Health Protection Agency. This organisational configuration is likely to change over the next few years. All training locations are based in North East England.

The academic programme here in the Northern region is one of the most successful in the UK and we take great pride in the fact that our programme is flexible and extremely successful. The feedback we get back from our trainees is overwhelmingly positive and it important to us that trainees have a great experience.
