Dear Friend:

August 4, 2011

* Justice Lynn Smith, in BC, has agreed to fast-track a challenge by the BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) to Canada's assisted suicide statute. The BCCLA is representing Gloria Taylor and the family of Kay Carter.

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) is seeking intervenor status in the BCCLA (Carter/Taylor) case. We expect that this case will eventually go to the Supreme Court of Canada. The case will be heard in the BC Court for several weeks starting on November 15.

Please vote NO on the CBC news online poll which asks: Should people have the legal right to assisted suicide. The poll is found by scrolling down on the article on this link: http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2011/08/should-people-have-the-legal-right-to-assisted-suicide.html

* The EPC successfully intervened in the Rasouli case. The Rasouli decision which was released on June 29, stated that: doctors must obtain consent before withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, including the ventilator, fluids and food and antibiotics. Today, EPC received notice that the doctors have decided to appeal the unanimous decision of the Ontario Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada. EPC will intervene in the case, if it is accepted by the Supreme Court of Canada.

The EPC has currently raised almost $17,000 toward the nearly $30,000 cost of successfully intervening in the Rasouli case. When reading the Rasouli decision it is evident that the three judge panel depended on the EPC intervention for their decision.

To donate toward the cost of the Rasouli intervention or to donate or purchase a $25 membership in the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition go to: http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm or phone our office at: 1-877-439-3348.

* It appears that the suicide lobby is attempting to have an Initiative added to the ballot in Massachusetts for the November 2012 election. We are expecting that the suicide lobby will soon announce more state-wide initiative attempts for the November 2012 election.

* EPC will be hosting a meeting in Vancouver on August 18 concerning the BCCLA (Carter/Taylor) court case featuring Alex Schadenberg. The media has intentionally promoted its bias in reporting the BCCLA case and we intend to create a push back strategy to the media bias. If you live near Vancouver BC please attend this meeting. Thanking you for your support
