I’ve no views but our librarian offers this suggestion:

The Wellcome Library and Wellcome Images probably lead the way with the use of ‘orphan images ‘ (copyright holder unknown). This is the statement on this subject on their website

Copyright

The Wellcome Library takes copyright seriously and only makes content available on its web sites in accordance with current UK legislation.

In line with this, the Library uses a “best endeavours” approach when digitising ‘orphan works’ – that is, works which are in copyright, but where the rights holder cannot be traced.

To accommodate the possibility that a previously unknown copyright holder may come forward and request the removal of content from our public web sites, the Library uses the following take-down policy:

Where the copyright holder is not known, The Wellcome Library makes all reasonable efforts to obtain copyright holders' consent to publish the images represented on this site. The Wellcome Library would like to hear from any copyright owners who are not properly identified on this site so that we may make the necessary corrections. The Library will immediately remove any content at the copyright holders’ request.

Regards

Mark

Dear Michaela,

We have previously used the following statement on an exhibition acknowledgements panel which included images where we could not find the copyright holder.

‘Every effort has been made to contact all copyright holders of the images included in this exhibition. Where copyright is unclear it has been credited as © unknown. If you are aware of the copyright holder of any of these unknown images, please contact a member of staff.’

Hello there,

Can anyone suggest or share the statement they use on images, when all attempts have been made to find the copyright holder with no success.  We are thinking of using something along the lines of

Copyright unknown.

We have made attempts to find the copyright holder of this image.

If you have any information regarding this, please contact a member of staff.

However, if anyone has a better suggestion it would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Micahla
