I'm a Science Communicator for Cancer Research UK, and the thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing that we fund thousands of researchers who are doing their damndest to beat cancer - a disease that has claimed many of my own family and friends.

I strongly believe that we are beating cancer through research, and the more people we can convince of that, the more money we can raise for funding it, and the faster we'll get there. Also, we need to encourage bright kids to go into cancer research, because they're the ones that are going to make the discoveries of the future.

For me, it's very important that the charity's supporters and the general public get to see the progress that's being made, and also understand why progress isn't as fast as people think it should be. Also, I think it's very important to try and effectively communicate risks (ie what does and doesn't cause cancer, and by how much) so people can make informed choices about how they live their life.

That's my 2p anyway,

Kat

Thanks for the link, Dom. It's a clear articulation of the official line, which still leaves me wondering what, day to day, motivates the individuals in the community of communicators - educators, journalists and PR folks alike?

Is it a practical desire to improve lives through better understanding of the world around them? An intellectual desire to save mankind from collective ignorance? A straightforward matter of doing daily tasks well (and getting paid for them) or, maybe, a political quest to promote social advancement and entrepreneurship?

I'm not writing any article or planning a project, have simply been thinking it over myself and been surprised how hard it is to isolate a coherent answer. So I thought: PSCI-COM members are an articulate, intelligent bunch - I wonder what motivates them.

Ben's right!

Maybe have a look here http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/NR/rdonlyres/D6B1ACFC-2F42-4F07-A5D1-938E1D83F3ED/0/ScienceforAllFinalReport.pdf

Section 1.2 talks about the multiplicity of reasons that are out there...
