    Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Inoculations

Unfortunately if these are custody vehicles there is always the risk of disposal of contaminated sharps that have been secreted . While the "risk" will be low with PPE etc unfortunately the people that are being transported A) have an higher statistical incidence of Hep B and B) may well have secreted various paraphinalia about their person. Dependant on where they are gong from/to there may not be the facility for thorough search protocols wherever they are coming from/going to

My other thought is that if these vehicles serve immigration detention centres the risk of Hep A may well be increased

Have to say that I would be tempted to offer vaccination on this basis. Would be interesting to know how many times techs discover discarded needles/blades etc. Maybe look at their accident/incident reports?

Happy to discuss off list if needed........

Hi Jo
That was my thoughts, just wanted to check, because they are really panicking and because the previous contractor inoculated all their staff.

I know another sewage company in ireland only provide polio and tetanus vaccines

Hi Tracey

I was under the impression that as long as the PPE and hygiene protocols are robust there is no need for inoculation (an OH colleague who works for a regional sewage company tells me that their workers don't have this)

Interesting post, had never considered body fluids in a custody vehicle!

Hi

I was wondering if I could get advice regarding the following issue.

We have a customer who maintains custody vehicles which have between 6-10 cells in them each. The vehicles have shallow troughs in them which collect all bodily fluids and excrement etc as there are obviously no toilets. These troughs drain into a drip tray underneath the vehicle just below a set of folding steps. the company will be maintaining these vehicles and whilst they will have been cleaned inside when they come in (but not outside). They are deep cleaned inside and outside every 8 weeks but there I no guarantee this falls with our service schedule. As result of this they are concerned about the technicians being exposed to Hepatitis A Hepatitis B and other possible diseases
.

the previous maintenance company inoculated all their staff and due to this my customer are wanting to do the same. A risk assessment has been carried out and they are still worrying that they will be putting their staff at risk,. I have recommended they provide disposable overalls with thicker disposable gloves. wide anti bacterial hand rub. toolbox talks on good hand hygiene.

They still feel the need for inoculations, can anybody direct me in the right direction as to whether innoculations are required or not

Tracey
