Who actually took this decision without consultation
with us? We have quite a lot of staff who never use their Trust email address,
so sending the activation code there will cause endless problems/delays.
Surely, the present system whereby a
non-NHS email address can be used to register within the n3 network was
perfectly workable and pretty secure. Permitting immediate registration outside
the n3 network for those with an nhs email address is a step forwards, so why
the step backwards by prohibiting registration with a non-NHS email address?
At present all registrations under our

The last post was
incorrect – wherever you register you will need a trust or professional

BUT you can register
from a home computer or within your work network.
As ever, there will
be individual circumstances that will need to be addressed on a case by case
basis. Eg a community nurse without an nhs.net email.
The change cannot go
ahead until the new text has been added to the registration page. At that
point in time the Regional

It was originally
due to start Monday, however, it cannot start until after people who have

I guess
they are trying to make sure that people who aren’t entitled don’t
get a username etc, but for those few it would cover we tend to ring up and
check they work for an entitled organisation anyway.

After
having received a lot of queries our regional administrator said that although
this is how it appears at first, the changes only apply if you are registering
on a non-NHS PC. NHS PC you can still use either NHS (preferable) or
personal – both automatic registration; non-NHS PC can be either NHS (for
automatic registration) or academic/professional (to be passed to regional
administrator to pass).
The
only change is that regional administrators have been told to disallow any
registrations that get passed to them which were on a non-NHS PC registrations
and using a personal address e.g. Hotmail/yahoo.

Hello all,
I've just heard that as of Monday, personal email
addresses won't be accepted when people register for NHS Athens passwords, on
or off the NHS network. I'm surprised and concerned by this.
Of course we've been encouraging people to use a work
address for some time, but some people have a reason to use a personal address
when they register (chief among them being: NHS login isn't working and it'll
take ages to get IT to sort it out).
Most of these reasons could be overcome with a bit of
time and effort on their part, but why would we want
I gather that work, academic and
"professional" addresses will be accepted. Some of our users' work
addresses are *.gov.uk or *.org.uk so I'm hoping they'll be OK.
I'm sure there's a reason for the change, but I'd
really like to know what it is & that everyone is sure it's sufficient to
set against the extra difficulties it introduces for a small-but-not-worthless
group of users, and the library staff trying to help them.
If I've understood this incorrectly, I would be
delighted to hear so!
Regards,
Hannah
