EMMA has corrected my first post -
“The key message here is that personal email addresses will no longer be accepted off N3.
It’s about tightening up the verification of applicant’s eligibility – so being on N3 is sufficient, because it’s the NHS network.”
.ie IF you register within N3, the Trust’s network a personal email CAN be used.
There is up to date information on the “About Athens” page on NHS Evidence (relevant bit below). It will also be clarified on the registration pages too.
Valid email addresses
Please register on the NHS network (N3) if you can. If you're not on the NHS network, but have an NHS email address, please provide this. Your account will then be created automatically.
If you're not on N3 and don't have an NHS email address, you must provide a professional, work or academic email address. We need this to verify your identity and your eligibility for an Athens account.
If you provide a personal email address and are not on N3 your application will be automatically refused. You will receive no further notification from us about your registration. Note that you can change your email address after your account has been set up.
If you are not in the NHS, and do not have a work, professional or academic email address but still think you are eligible, contact your regional administrator.
You will need to tell them which of the eligibility criteria applies to you, and provide proof of your eligibility. We would normally expect to see the web address and contact details of the company you work for, and your professional registration number (where applicable).
As I said in my first post, once we can go live there are two word docs to clarify this. Apologies that I missed the small word ‘not’ when I skim read them L.

Subject: RE: No personal email for Athens registration
Dear Les,
The regional ATHENS administrators have been working with Emma Webb (NARAG/NICE) on this.
I have sent Emma the LIS mail to her in order for her to respond.
The last post was incorrect – wherever you register you will need a trust or professional email
BUT you can register from a home computer or within your work network.
As ever, there will be individual circumstances that will need to be addressed on a case by case basis. Eg a community nurse without an nhs.net email.
The change cannot go ahead until the new text has been added to the registration page. At that point in time the Regional Administrators have two short documents from Emma to circulate
In the NESHA, I will circulate to all NESHA Librarians including the Local ATHENS administrators, once we are ready to go live.
It was originally due to start Monday, however, it cannot start until after people who have registered under the old registration rubric have been processed.
EMMA – correct me if I am wrong, please
Best Regards

I guess they are trying to make sure that people who aren’t entitled don’t get a username etc, but for those few it would cover we tend to ring up and check they work for an entitled organisation anyway.

After having received a lot of queries our regional administrator said that although this is how it appears at first, the changes only apply if you are registering on a non-NHS PC. NHS PC you can still use either NHS (preferable) or personal – both automatic registration; non-NHS PC can be either NHS (for automatic registration) or academic/professional (to be passed to regional administrator to pass).
The only change is that regional administrators have been told to disallow any registrations that get passed to them which were on a non-NHS PC registrations and using a personal address e.g. Hotmail/yahoo.

Subject: No personal email for
Hello all,
I've just heard that as of Monday, personal email addresses won't be accepted when people register for NHS Athens passwords, on or off the NHS network. I'm surprised and concerned by this.
Of course we've been encouraging people to use a work address for some time, but some people have a reason to use a personal address when they register (chief among them being: NHS login isn't working and it'll take ages to get IT to sort it out).
Most of these reasons could be overcome with a bit of time and effort on their part, but why would we want
I gather that work, academic and "professional" addresses will be accepted. Some of our users' work addresses are *.gov.uk or *.org.uk so I'm hoping they'll be OK.
I'm sure there's a reason for the change, but I'd really like to know what it is & that everyone is sure it's sufficient to set against the extra difficulties it introduces for a small-but-not-worthless group of users, and the library staff trying to help them.
If I've understood this incorrectly, I would be delighted to hear so!

Hannah
