HI Julie This is very difficult to answer because we 'need' so many more things to make life bearable than a Roman Squaddie did - so we need much more money to pay for them. A better approach may be to ask what a denarius would have bought, and from this to go on to ask whether our Roman Solider would have had enough money from his salary to be able to support a family, or to save for his old age, or whether his pay was just enough to live on? Did he have to pay 'deductions', such as messing and for equipment out of his cash? How did his pay compare with that of his superiors? (it might be worth making a comparison with modern British army salary differentials where private gets about £20k, and the head of the armed forces about £245 k pa). Indeed, were officers paid, or were they expected to be able to support themselves from private incomes? And how did a solider's pay compare with what you could earn in civvy street? This approach gives a much better idea of how well off a Roman Solider would have though himself than trying to make any kind of conversion of the value of a denarius in to modern cash. Hope this helps Regards Richard.
