Hi all

a little periodic housekeeping, for information.

disability-research is a global discussion group 'for all those interested in research as it affects disabled people. It provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and news, among researchers and others working primarily within a social interpretation of disability.'

It has more than 800 members in more than 50 countries, including almost all of those who actively teach and research within critical disability studies. It includes many disability activists, public officials, practitioners and others. Thus, it involves everyone, not only academics, and one of its founding aims was to open up academic debates to accountability and dissemination amongst the wider community.

All your messages to the list are published - they are archived publicly and permanently on the list website for anyone to read. It is therefore important to consider the international and diverse readership when posting. Sometimes it is helpful to explain your terms of reference and to identify your geographical context in a message.

It is not easy to maintain an open, public, diverse and inclusive online community but we have done reasonably well for the past 16 years, so a word of thanks is due to list members for their perseverance in this. When issues arise, complaints can be directed either to the list owner (me) or to the JISCmail helpdesk. Ultimately, we are reliant on JISCmail for their tolerance in allowing us to conduct ourselves in an open and relatively unguarded way. Where members do breach JISCmail conditions of service we risk collective sanctions (such as making the entire list private rather than public). We try to avoid this but from time to time, a reminder is useful.

May I remind everyone of the etiquette that applies to all JISCmail lists.

Please familiarise yourself with the JISCMail Acceptable Use Policy

http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/policyandsecurity/acceptableuse.html

and the following points:

* Respect copyright when forwarding messages - if in doubt check with the author

* Respect people's privacy - don't give out the private email addresses or contact details of others

* Think before cross-posting - some people belong to more than one list

* Don't call someone names or be rude, sarcastic or condescending

* Watch where that reply is going - should it go to the whole list, or just to the original sender?

* Send your commands to the correct address - [log in to unmask]

* Make sure your email address is correct

* Complain to the list owner - not the list

* Suspend mail when going away - you can always catch up via the archives

* Avoid sending large attachments to JISCMail lists - use the files area associated with your list

* Use a meaningful subject line - it will increase the chances of your message being read and found within the list archives

* Write relevant messages appropriate to the purpose of the list

* Don't quote an entire message when replying as this leads to very long messages

* Keep your lines short and don't send long messages - waffle is off-putting

* Use a short, well-designed signature

* Only use ASCII (plain) text - ie don't use pound (£) signs

Best wishes

Mark
