1. SCODHE Executive and operations business

1.1 Chairs Report

VM presented the Chair's annual report / summary (attached)

1.2 Financial report

VM had received a report from TA. It was noted that membership fees had been increased to bring SCODHE in line with other subject associations. The hand written ledger has been replaced with electronic financial records and new forms and financial procedures are being developed.

1.3 Membership report

LP informed member that almost 100 UK institutions had been identified as offering dance at HE level (HND, foundation degree, honours degree and/or postgraduate provision). All institutions had been sent membership packs and a reminder email had gone out on the SCUDD and SCODHE jisc lists. Completed membership forms/fees have started to come in although increasing our membership remains a key objective.

1.4 Constitution - review and approval of changes

VM highlighted the key changes being made to the Constitution:

· Changes of language, more vibrant and up-to-date

· Changes to the titles of the executive officers

· Voting to require the majority of the membership (previously two thirds)

· Electronic voting to be an option

· Non HEIs can become members without the requirement of an approval vote by the membership

The meeting was happy in principle to approve the changes.

1.5 Northern area meeting

FB reported that a northern area regional SCODHE meeting had taken place on 4th July 2011, linked in with the PALATINE event 'Digital reflection'. The number of attendees was small but many others had expressed interest in attending future meetings. Themes discussed included:

· Importance of SCODHE as a voice for dance in HE

· Value of meetings for information exchange, support and networking

· The changing curricula in HE dance

· Challenges and vulnerability of working in small teams

· Student employability

· Suggestions for SCODHE partnership e.g. with Foundation for Community Dance

· Proposed future event/conference theme Evolving Identities

1.6 Nominations call for new executive members

VM notified the meeting that there will soon be a call out for additional members of the executive committee. Application from persons with experience in website design and management especially welcomed.

2. Presentation by Professor Maria Delgado (Chair of REF panel), followed by open questions

Professor Maria Delgado gave a very informative presentation entitled From RAE2008 to REF2012. Guidance in submissions will be published later this month; all members encouraged to feedback to HEFCE via subject associations and their own institutions.

Members' questions led to a number of points of clarification.

MD considered it very positive that the 'research users' on the main panel include persons with performing arts expertise. HEFCE is planning a research users' day for September 2011.

Submissions can only be to one sub-panel even if field of research overlaps panels (e.g. Dance Science). MD is lobbying for institutions wishing to make multiple submissions to one sub-panel (e.g. separate dance and music submissions) to be allowed to do so.

Much discussion of 'impact' took place and the need to build time for this into funding bids. It was suggested SCODHE could pay a role in translation of information about the REF for the dance community and perhaps develop a toolkit for 'impact'.

MD recommended looking at the case studies of Earth Sciences and Physics as good examples (available on the HEFCE website).

Action: Members to feedback to SCODHE and own institutions concerning submission guidance when available.

Action: SCODHE executive to discuss SCODHE's role in relation to interpreting the REF.

Action: LP to circulate power-point slides of MD's presentation via the jisc lists.

3. Open Discussions - the role and direction of SCODHE

Topics

· What are the current needs of the dance community in HEIs?

· What are the implications for dance of PALATINE closing? How might we address this gap?

· In what ways might scodhe better support dance research?

· How might scodhe support dance in the HE sector achieve better visibility?

It was suggested that having one named SCODHE representative in each institution can limit engagement by all staff. SCODHE members asked to encourage all colleagues to join and utilise the jisc list.

Discussion took place regarding the scope of SCODHE's remit (as expressed in the Constitution 2.5). The meeting felt that a strength of PALATINE has been its wide scope engaging with universities, colleges and vocational institutions.

It was suggested that SCODHE, perhaps in collaboration with other organisations, pursue possible support from the HEA. Another suggestion was to find out if SCODHE could use the PALATINE mailing list to share information.

Action: All members to encourage colleagues to join the SCODHE jisc list.

Action: VM to contact the PALATINE regarding mailing list and pursue possible support from HEA.

4. Date of next AGM: University of Leeds as part of Psi conference, 27th June- 1st July 2010 (tbc)

SCODHE has also been invited to convene a meeting of the membership at the Somatics and Technology conference, Chichester University 2012.

Standing Conference on Dance Higher Education - AGM July 8th, 2011

Chairs annual report / summary

This year has been one of renewal and revival for this was the first period in over 5 years that there has been a full and properly constituted committee. As such the executive committee has met every few months to review, update and consolidate the organization such that we can be more visible and proactive in the coming years. Given the current, forthcoming and proposed changes to the HE sector, this seems to me to be vital if dance is to be supported and represented in the difficult years ahead. As such we have:

Reviewed and updated the constitution (for approval at this AGM)

Co-opted new representatives/ committee members

Reviewed and begun to updated our financial systems

Reviewed the web and communications

Reviewed the membership and increased membership fees (in line with SCUDD)

Externally the committee has represented the voice of dance in a range of contexts and we are looking to ways to increase our representation and collaborative efforts as a way of drawing in a more active engagement with scodhe from across the sector.

This year we have supported the HE dance sector in the following ways:
