Marc Auge's ideas aren't that far from 'Place and Placelessness',by E Relph, 1976,3rd ed 1986. Aren't edgelands related to the urban fringe, the sort of place you get electricity substations, by-passes, reservoirs, fly-tipping, abandoned farmland, landfill....and in France, those long retail ribbon developments that seem to line every N-route out of all big French towns. In which case,is the old geography abbreviation 'LULU' (large Unsightly Land Uses' still in use...could be relevant to 'edgelands'.
