Thanks for this - I have obviously completely misunderstood Ali G.

PS Robert

I just checked and the 'real' fictional name of the Ali G character was 'Alistair Leonard Graham' - not a noted Asian style of name even In Staines.

I'm not sure if the Ali G target was specifically Asians (in Staines or without) Robert but a) it's nothing unusual among white kids - I see it myself a plenty b) Ali G did seem to be white which is a bit odd as c) Asians (in the UK meaning Indians and Pakistanis usually) are generally seen as being 'black' .

I think she was and is taken so seriously because people who listened to her could tell the difference between play and parody. Unlike Ali G (though there the mockery may be partly directed at white youth wanting to be black), her music plays around with but shows a genuine reverence for the traditions of black music.

When I first heard Amy Winehouse I wondered how anyone could take seriously such a blatant parody of The Soul Diva then when I discovered she was Jewish I began to smile (this is musical Ali Gee I thought) and when I discovered that the Hawley Arms was one of her favourite pubs I positively warmed to her (if it's still anything like I remember it from the 80s).
